#067 | Boundaries | John's Warstory
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
Boundaries: it's hard to know if anything is as important in our early sobriety. We're faced with some rather large pills to swallow in those beginning stages. "All you have to do is change everything." But why are boundaries so important? And is it something that we'll always have to do?
In this week's episode Willy and Cameron are inspired to talk about boundaries. After we sober up, we can still go to the bar, right? We just won't drink! It's been said that you can only hang around a barbershop so long before you end up getting a haircut. Without boundaries, we're likely to revert back to that negative behavior.
Just ask John. John's warstory provided this week's topic and once you hear it, it will be easy to see why. After struggling time and time again to get sober, he was finally able to put away the vices until his lack of boundaries had him caught up in the insanity all over again. Listen to his hardcore, action packed story now!

#066 | Coping Mechanisms with Robert White | Deana's Warstory
Tuesday Apr 06, 2021
Tuesday Apr 06, 2021
It can be difficult to know where we pick up the habits that we have. Odds are, somewhere along the way our “bad” habits, actually served us as a survival instinct of sorts. Wherever they come from, coping mechanisms are not always bad. And they certainly aren’t easy to move past either.
On this week’s episode the guys are joined through the magic of Zoom by Robert White of Any Length Retreat in Pflugerville, TX. Robert shares a bit of his story and discusses how they address the topic of coping mechanisms, along with many other things, in their facility. Robert is constantly sharing his experiences with others and is careful to always include his struggles so others know a life of sobriety is not a perfect one. But that it is better.
Our topic of coping mechanisms was inspired by Deanna, who shared her journey of alcoholism with us in this week’s Warstory segment. Deanna learned from a young age that love was conditional. She chose to believe the world around her was one way, when clearly it was not. This behavior eventually led her into a number of toxic relationships and she eventually turned to drinking to cope. Tune in to hear how she’s gained some momentum and kept the sobriety train moving.

#065 | Breaking The Cycle | Jonathan's Warstory
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Monday Mar 29, 2021
Have you ever felt like your destined to repeat the mistakes of you past? Or beyond that, repeat the mistakes of your parents? Is there such a thing as a family curse? What do we do when we recognize that we are perpetuating the cycle?
On this week’s show Cameron and Willy get into Breaking The Cycle. It’s not always an easy thing to see when we’re going through it, but typically, they’ll come a point where it becomes undeniably clear that we are continuing to perpetuate negative behaviors. It’s then that we get to make a decision.
Just ask Jonathan. Looking at himself in the mirror with blood dripping down his chin after a hard and fast line, he had a moment of clarity. He decided then and there to break the cycle. Hear his amazing tale in this week’s Warstory.
Jonathan has a podcast, Grounded Phoenix, where they talk about all things recovery. He’s teamed up with Team XII to bring some amazing content!

#064 | Progression | Olivia's Warstory
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Tuesday Mar 23, 2021
Most of us didn’t skyrocket right to our drug of choice. It’s likely that drinking wasn’t immediately a problem. Somewhere in our drinking and using things crossed a line and there was no looking back. The disease is a progressive one and, like the promises in the AA big book, it can happen sometimes quick, sometimes slowly.
In this episode Willy and Cameron are talking about the progression. While it’s easy to recognize the progression of our illness now that we’re this far down the road, are we able to see the progression of the recovery? Let’s look at it a bit closer.
Our topic today is inspired by Olivia from Choosing Recovery who shared her story for this week’s warstory segment. Olivia starts in her childhood and explains a very slow progression into drugs and alcohol that would eventually have her doing things she swore she would never do for the sake of the next fix. Things continued to get worse until finally she was blessed with an arrest that would be the start of a new progression in a positive direction. Her life is a true testament to the gifts we receive in recovery.
Olivia, along with her husband Scott, have a YouTube channel, Choosing Recovery, where they speak with other addicts and alcoholics to share their experience, strength and hope.
Their website offers resources and Olivia keeps a blog about navigating her experience in sobriety and mental wellness.

#063 | Self-Love | Scott's Warstory
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
Self-love. It may not come natural to most of us. In fact, usually the opposite is true. But once we begin to clear away the wreckage of our past and establish some new healthy practices, we can find acts of self-love everywhere.
In this episode Willy and Cameron get into self-love. When we’re on top of our game and firing on all cylinders it can be easy to love ourselves. But what about when we’re struggling? Is it possible to love ourselves when we aren’t living up to our potential?
The truth is self-love is learned. Just like anything else in that regard, it gets better with practice. Just ask this week’s war story. Scott shares with us his amazing tale of recovery and the journey he has been on since learning how to love himself after finally getting clean. Though he was always quick to show and express love to those around him, the one person Scott struggled to love was himself. From the schoolyard to the jailhouse, into the courtroom and on to multiple treatment centers, hear what it took for him to finally get some solid footing beneath him and begin being more of the man he always knew he could be.
Scott and his wife Olivia are the hosts of Choosing Recovery, a YouTube channel sharing people’s stories of recovery, along with other conversations around addiction. You can also find their videos along with their blogs at www.choosing-recovery.com. A lot of great stories shared here including our own Cameron and Willy!

#062 | Working With Others | Jim's Warstory
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
We hear it all the time. We work on ourselves so that we can give ourselves away. When all else fails, working with others works. Why is that?
In this week’s episode Cameron and Willy get into working with others!
There is a reason that this is the 12th step in the A.A. program. There’s a lot we must do first before we can be sure we have a message to share with others. But on the flipside, without it, we’re often incomplete.
This week’s warstory knows all too well about feeling incomplete. Jim Thomson, A.K.A. “The Enforcer” had a reputation in the NHL for his rough and tough demeanor on the ice. Out of the rink he was living a fast and destructive lifestyle with no signs of stopping. Eventually, the pain of staying the same outweighed the fear of change and he was able to get the help he needed. Hear how he did it and how working with others is his TRUE calling in life.

#060 | People Pleasing | Alex's Warstory
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
Tuesday Feb 23, 2021
How much of ourselves are we willing to sacrifice in order to please others? Where is the line between "service work" and "people pleasing?" How can we learn to say "no" in a loving and non-threatening way?
This week's episode is about people pleasing. It can have drastic consequences and extreme repercussions yet for many of us, it's a way for us to get validation. In some cases, it can lead us down a dark path and cost us that which we hold most precious: our integrity, morals, and values.
Our warstory this week is from Alex who knows just how much "people pleasing" cost. Though he managed to lose himself in basketball in his youth, when an injury had him warming the bench, he began to fall in with the rough crowd of peers in Los Angeles and became immersed in the drug scene. Living life this way eventually cost him his freedom and he spent some time behind bars. Tune in to hear what it finally took for him to take his life back and begin surrendering to a solution that has him free of drugs and alcohol.
Thank you Alex for sharing your story!

#059 | Being Teachable | Calire's Warstory
Tuesday Feb 16, 2021
Tuesday Feb 16, 2021
Do you ever feel like you know everything? A lot of us sure thought so when we were out drinking and using. It wasn't until we were able to shatter that notion that we were truly able to begin receiving help. In short, we had to be teachable.
So what does it mean to be teachable? In this week's episode we get into how being teachable played a role in early recovery and how it still seems a crucial part of our daily lives. We find lessons come from all sorts of unexpected places if we are open to receive them. The more we're willing to remain teachable, the better chance we stand at living happy, joyous and free.
Our warstory this week comes from the other half of the Rehab Barbie podcast! Claire joins us to tell us what life was like growing up misdiagnosed as bi-polar and using cocaine from a young age. In college, she began to realize that she didn't drink the way other people did. After many failed attempts to control it, she began to realize that she was indeed an alcoholic. She became teachable and started seeking knowledge about the disease of alcoholism and the physiological effects produced by alcohol. In their podcast, Melissa and Claire get into the science of addiction and how that helps them in their sober lives. We're honored to share their stories and hope you'll check out their podcast (before they get sued by Mattel!)

#058 | Underlying Issues | Melissa's Warstory
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
Reasons we drink or drug can often include the need to escape from or get a sense of relief from our underlying issues. In sobriety we're able to begin looking at these issues to determine how best to deal with them in a healthy and constructive manner. Not doing so can have disastrous consequences for our sobriety.
In this episode Cameron and Willy talk about underlying issues. How can we recognize them? What can we do about them? Were they really what was making us drink or drug? What are your thoughts? Listen in and add to the conversation in the comments.
This week's Warstory is a good one! Melissa from Rehab Barbie podcast joins us to share what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now. Melissa's journey to surrender was not an easy one. Even though she drank alcoholically from the get-go, it was Adderall that really got its hooks in her. After finally giving that up, she refused to think of alcohol as a problem until it too became undeniable. Now, after finally surrendering, hear what life is like for her today. HINT: awesome. It's awesome.

Families
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
Wednesday Feb 03, 2021
When we're in the throes of our disease, our actions can have a lasting negative impact on the people around us. Usually the damage happens to those who love us most. While we are consumed by self-centeredness, family units often become cracked and broken. The tragedy befalls not only ourselves but everyone in our wake.
On this episode we are joined by a special guest from up North. Ryan Phillips, Athlete and Global Influencer, occupies the third seat from the comfort of his home in Canada. Ryan is an inspirational figure with an interesting path that includes doing time for smuggling weed over the border. After conquering his own demons, he's gotten to a place where he is able to bring awareness to causes such as mental health, substance abuse, trauma, and child sex trafficking.
Recently, Ryan has found himself on the other end of addiction as he becomes witness to his daughter's progression into the world of substance abuse. We talk with him about what its like to be the father of an addict knowing full well what he himself put his own family through when in the throws of his own disease. Listen in for a great conversation.
Our Warstory this week comes from Raphael is sure to move you. Raphael's story of being the parent of an addict is what inspired today's topic. He shares on his daughter's progression into the drug scene, witnessing her lash out after experiencing trauma, descend into violent episodes, and even shoot up heroin in order to scathe off withdrawals. He brings a unique perspective that we can often lose sight of when we're runnin' and gunnin'. We're honored to share his story with you and we hope you get as much from as we did. Thank you Rafael.
