#120 | Resources Outside of Sobriety | Courtney’s Warstory
Friday Apr 29, 2022
Friday Apr 29, 2022
So you just got sober but are feeling stagnant. You’re wondering how to deal with some of the new information you’ve just discovered about yourself but you're unsure how best to do that. You’re not alone.
Truth be told, getting sober is just the tip of the iceberg. Often we need to keep working on ourselves and that can mean looking for outside resources to do it. There’s a lot of different ways to get sober but that path may not help you deal with things like trauma, anxiety or depression. Good news. If you can learn how to deal with life without drinking, you can learn how to deal with everything else that ails you as well. This is what Courtney is finding out as she moves into other programs that help her continue her journey of self-development. A lot is required to heal!
Courtney joins us to share her warstory this week and we’re honored to share it with you. Early on she was taught that your insides didn’t matter, as long as you kept up appearances and surprisingly, Courtney was able to do that for a long time even as her addiction continued to progress into harder, more deadly drugs, putting her in danger at every turn. Hear how she was finally able to turn it around and how life is for her today in recovery.
Thank you Courtney for your beautiful story! We’re excited to follow your journey!
You can follow her here at @the.sobercourtney and as always, check out our man Jackson and @stay.stopped
Thanks Hellions! Remember you are the most important part of the show.

#119 | The 12 Steps for the Non-Believer with Steven | Steven’s Story
Friday Apr 22, 2022
Friday Apr 22, 2022
Have you ever been curious about AA? See a lot of people getting sober in a 12 step program but don’t understand the “God” thing? You’re not alone. In fact almost everyone who has ever dawned the door of a 12 step meeting has had the same thought or notion.
On this week’s episode we’re joined by our dear friend Steven who explains to us how he worked the 12 steps as a non-believer. We get into the real nitty gritty of what the 12 steps are and how there is no one way to work them.
If you’re in AA this might be a refreshing perspective on the steps. If you’re not in AA, you may find this answers a lot of the questions you have about AA and getting sober.
And if that wasn’t intriguing enough, Steven was also nice enough to share his warstory with us and…. He did not disappoint. Hear what it was like for him and what made him finally decide to get sober.
Thanks Steven for sharing your story!
Thanks Hellions! Remember you are the most important part of the show.

#118 | Comparing Ourselves to Others | Brett’s Warstory
Saturday Apr 16, 2022
Saturday Apr 16, 2022
The drink or the drug was often a solution. It did something for us that we could not do for ourselves. In our case, it shut off our mind and allowed us to just be. For a moment we weren’t comparing ourselves to others or feeling itchy in our skin. But as it does, the substance took hold and the solution became more and more of the problem.
Brett, our warstory this week, was no different. The drinking and drugging took a hold of him because he found in it a way of being that he couldn’t find by any other means. He found himself on Death's doorstep a number of times because he couldn’t see the way out. Here what it finally took for him to allow those who loved him to help him the way he needed and for him to surrender to the solution.
Thank you Brett for sharing your amazing story!
Thanks Hellions! Remember you are the most important part of the show.

#117 | Rediscovering Hopes and Dreams | Jeff’s Warstory
Friday Apr 08, 2022
Friday Apr 08, 2022
Did we give up on our hopes and dreams and then turn to drugs and alcohol OR did we give up on our hopes and dreams when we turned to drugs and alcohol? Who can say exactly? What we do know is that somewhere along the way, any idea or notion that we’d be somebody usually went away.
Good news! In sobriety we reclaim those hopes and dreams.
This week we have an amazing warstory from Jeff who has come a long way and is rediscovering his own hopes and dreams. As someone who literally was born with drugs and alcohol around him, it was no surprise when he turned out to have issues with addiction. His use had him committing crimes and he wound up doing multiple stints behind bars before he finally realized that he was his own worst enemy. Tune in to hear how he turned it around and what life is like for him today.
Thanks Jeff for sharing your amazing story!

Sobriety often is the first big gift we give to ourselves. If we’re lucky, it can often be the starting point to some beautiful revelations and wondrous developments.
In this episode we’re joined in studio by David James, friend of the program and fitness guru. David has had a pretty tumultuous relationship with alcohol over the years but recently celebrated one year! Or 13 months, as you’ll hear here. Through his recovery he has been able to see the value that comes from continuing to work on yourself. Fitness is just one of the ways to do this. But self love can come in a lot of forms. Today, we’re talking about practicing self love through personal development.
Tune in to hear David’s story. You’re sure to hear something you identify with.
You can find more information on David James at @davidjames.fit

Oh alcohol. At one time, you worked for us. You did for us what we could not do for ourselves! But somewhere, you changed. You began to hurt us more and more! And no matter how hard we tried we found we just couldn’t quit you! Why?? You’re an asshole!!!
This week we’re joined by the amazing Amy C. Willis who brought with her some amazing insight into the curious relationship with alcohol. Not only is she currently a sobriety and mindset coach but she is someone who had her own mystifying relationship to alcohol which she so willingly shared with us on this episode.
Amy had a front row seat to the ugliness of alcoholism as a child and eventually turned to drinking to cope with not being able to deal with the emotions that often come with trauma. Years later, a life changing event caused her to look at her drinking with a new lens and she was able to swallow some hard truths about her relationship to alcohol.
We had so much fun Amy! Thank you for sharing your story and your time!

#114 | Don’t Take It Personally | Ashley’s Warstory
Friday Mar 18, 2022
Friday Mar 18, 2022
“Don’t take it personally!” This was a big one for us. We addicts and alcoholics seem to be a sensitive breed. We make it all about us even when it's not. Especially when it’s not! We self-destruct to numb the perceived slight that comes from others. Our inability to see things as they really are can keep us sick for a long time. Today, we remember not to take things personally. Easier said than done sometimes.
Our topic this week was inspired by the warstory from Ashley! Ashley grew up in a well-meaning religious household. She abandoned her faith after a heartbreak left her questioning everything. She quickly found herself in trouble and eventually addicted to heroin. It wasn’t until a prison stint allowed her to reconnect with her faith that she was able to reclaim her life. We’re blessed and grateful to tell her story here.
Amazing story Ashley! Thank you so much for sharing!

#113 | Is Addiction a Gift? | Hilary’s Warstory
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Have you ever looked at your addiction and thought, “what a gift?” No? Well, it’s not something we’re often able to do at first but believe it or not many people in recovery are thankful for the growth that has occurred as a result of getting sober and living a life of sobriety. This week’s warstory is no different.
Hilary inspired our topic this week when she wrapped up her story with this idea that she was gifted this life as a result of recovery. After getting sober at a real early age, it hasn’t always been easy for Hilary to identify with other alcoholics. She did see something in the rooms of alcoholics anonymous that kept her coming back and when she started living life on life’s terms, she began to see life change as a result of doing the work. Today she prides herself on growing from every experience and it allows her to find meaning in all that life brings her way. This is an inspiring story you won’t want to miss.
Thanks for sharing your story Hilary!

What was worse? The physical hangover or the emotional one? Hmmm. Lucky for us, both are a thing of the past. But in this episode we chose to spotlight the emotional hangover because it often ties into negative self-talk which doesn’t always just disappear just because you stopped drinking.
We are joined this week by Blair Sharp, aka @sobreityactivist, who talks to us about how the emotional hangovers seem to have gotten progressively worse before the end. Hear her tell her warstory of what it was like before, what happened and why she finally decided to be Alcohol Free (AF).
We had a hell of a good time talking to Blair and the conversation ended up going a few different places, including back to Junior English.
Thanks for coming on Blair and sharing your story!!
